What is Filet Crochet?Filet crochet is made from rows of double crochet. A pattern is applied by working with a set of three stitches as if it was a square in a grid. Some squares are open, some are not. The square is not actually a square, but 3 double crochet stitches. The first and third stitches are the sides of the square. When the middle one is skipped, by moving along with a chain stitch, the square is open. When the middle double crochet stitch is included, the square is filled. The patterns are shown on graph paper grid, with a dot in the squares that are filled. It is easy to loose track of where you are in a pattern, especially if you pick up your work frequently throughout the day to add a few stitches. I make a copy of the grid, and mark off each row as I do it, so I can quickly tell where I am. What Crochet Stitches Are Used? This is another great advantage of Filet Crochet; you only need to know the chain stitch and double crochet stitch. Often the edges are done in a pattern that requires increasing at the end of a row. I almost gave up on it over that stitch, but I finally figured out a way to do it that looks good, and isn't too hard for me to do.
